Recently we visited with documentarian, playwright, author, poet, and friend Elaine Madsen at her home in Los Angeles. Over tea we chatted about the various projects we are working on together, ideas for the future, and life in general, as we often do.
One such project, we are helping Elaine and Virginia Madsen with, their documentary titled "I Know a Woman Like That", lead us to the topic of what energizes and motivates us about "telling the story", about sharing our art with others.
This lead Elaine to recount the touching and inspiring story of how one of her poems, titled "A Tiny Bit of Me", struck a woman attending one of Elaine's readings, in such a way, that moved her to create an impacting painting and give it to Elaine. Ryu captured the moment, in this photo, as you can see me (in my favorite hat) listening to Elaine recount the story the painting tells. "A Tiny Bit of Me"
Elaine Madsen is an Emmy ® award wining documentary maker, poet and playwright, as well as mother of actors Virginia and Michael Madsen and their writer/restaurantaur sister Cheri. Elaine is working on a new book of poetry and directing the documentary titled "I Know a Woman Like That", which Academy Award ® nominee daughter Virginia is producing. She is also the coordinator for the playwright directing unit of The Actors Studio.
